Do you have the 5 qualities needed to be a top-notch Project Manager?

There is more to being on a project team than just do the work that I need to.  I have worked with many project managers and a significant number of those people have said to me, “I wish the team members knew how to work in a project”.  Project team members need to know some project management things as well, and not just project management terminology, but also how the things they do impact the project and beyond. When a person sees their work as an individual contribution, they are not able to see how their actions impact the project.  Similarly, the risks an individual is willing to take, the project will also take, but the project may not be so inclined and will nevertheless unknowingly accept.

This presentation will be on 4 key areas that the new project manager will need to understand, but this does not just apply to project managers but also team members who may be inexperienced in working in projects or people just beginning their exploration of project management.  When the team understands how a project works, they understand how their decisions impact the project success, it is not enough for the individual to be successful, but the collection of individuals or the team.  Understanding these 4 areas will provide a foundation upon which the team can work to successfully deliver the project expectations.

Jon M. Quigley PMP CTFL Jon has an Engineering Degree from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and two Master’s Degrees from City University of Seattle.  Jon has thirty years of product development, and process management.  He has many years of product management experience along with key product management processes such as requirements management, test management, quality management and configuration management just to name a few.  All his product development experience is in the software or embedded products areas, and most of that is automotive with some industrial applications.

Jon enjoys team work, and has experience working in distributed teams that can range over the globe. Jon has written many books and contributed with others in this regard sometimes without ever meeting the other author in person, and the same is true for his product development work.  In fact, many of the 7 US patents he has ceded were with distributed team members. Jon is familiar with agile and complex approaches to product development and teaches business to business and at community colleges and universities on these topics. 

He is an experienced project manager, having both in practice and theoretical.  He has written many project management and technical books, scores of magazine articles at 50 different magazines, teaches the subject at technical schools and universities as well as business to business.  Jon has well established analytical skills through his engineering training and experience.  Jon also understands business and the needs for minimizing the costs and Jon has experience in a variety of cost understanding and cost improvement approaches many of which are in his book Reducing Process Costs with Lean, Six Sigma, and Value Engineering Techniques. Jon has saved the companies at which he has contributed millions of dollars.  I have performed end to end process mapping of a large multinational electronic / electrical engineering organization, and that includes value stream mapping.

Jon has trained and provided guidance for many project management organizations as well as other businesses.  He is a good verbal and written communicator, and is well versed in project decomposition techniques, estimating techniques, schedule development and tracking as well as risk management.  He is a frequent speaker at PMI events, and has many articles on the PMI website ranging from estimating and risk management to team building.

Jon has won awards such as the Volvo-3P Technical Award in 2005 going on to win the 2006 Volvo Technology Award. Jon has secured seven US patents and several international patents.  These patents range from human machine interfaces to telemetry systems and driver’s aides.  Jon is on the Western Carolina University Master of Project Management Advisory Board as well as Forsyth Technical Community College Advisory Board. He has also been a guest lecturer on Project Management at Wake Forest University's Charlotte NC campus.  Jon teaches Project Management classes at City University of Seattle via distance learning as well as technical schools, community colleges and businesses (B2B).  Jon is an expert at ITMPI (IT Metrics and Productivity Institute) giving webinars on project management and product development topics. He is part of the Pm2Go experts (The Standish Group) and has given webinars at The Project Management Institute and spoken before PMI Chapters across North Carolina and parts of Virginia.

Jon has membership in ASQ, SAE, AIAG and PMI (holding Project Management Professional Certification) and has spoken at numerous PMI events.  Jon also has the CTFL certification from ISTQB.

Community Chapter Meeting 

As a means of helping chapter and local community members who are certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP®) satisfy the continuing education requirements for re-certification, PMI Metrolina Chapter arranges its monthly meeting schedule to allow a 1 hour PDU training session to be incorporated into its normal meeting.

Topics presented during these sessions are designed to not only satisfy the PDU requirement for re-certifying as a PMP, but to also provide wide appeal to people involved in project management regardless of whether or not they are certified PMPs. The 1-hour sessions meet the educational requirements to qualify for 1 PDU credits for maintaining PMP® certification or to meet the requirement for attending 35 hours of formal project management education prior to applying to sit for the PMP® exam.

The sessions are open to all.
