Project management is the practice of initiating, planning executing, controlling, and closing the work of a team or individual to achieve specific goals and meet specific criteria at the specified time.  The primary challenge of project management is to achieve all of the project goals within the given constraints.  This methodology crosses many industries.

The project of writing a book is unique and temporary and falls within this definition.  Novelists have limited constraints in order to complete their objectives.

In this session, Dr. Ashley Oliphant will be speaking to our group Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at the Peculiar Rabbit.  We are excited to hear how Dr. Ashley uses novelist Earnest Hemmingway's process for project managing the unique product of a book.  She will discuss things such as:  deliverables, risk, constraints, schedule, implementation and monitoring and controlling.

Attendees will follow Ernest Hemingway’s exploits on the Bahamian island of Bimini from 1935 to 1937, the very moment in time when the International Game Fish Association (under the author’s co-leadership) was emerging. She further explains how Hemingway’s role in the formation of the IGFA, his underappreciated seminal writing about competitive saltwater angling when the sport was still in its infancy, the amazing fishing he enjoyed on the island, and the way all of these experiences translated into the composition of his posthumous novel Islands in the Stream.

Dr. Ashley has published the only book on this period in Hemingway’s life and reveals unexpected dimensions to the Hemingway portrait that deserve attention, including his surprising humor, his advanced conservationist views several decades before the environmental movement even began, and his egalitarian ideas about his contemporary female counterparts in the big-game fishing world, challenging the usual portrait of Hemingway as a chauvinist with no personal rules, boundaries, or conscience. The presentation includes beautiful vintage photographs of 1930s Bimini that have never been published in book form.

In addition to the opportunity to learn about project management across new and different industries, we also have the opportunity to network with an array of project managers and various players in the industry and across fields.

But wait...there is more.  This location is know for its view.  We wil be using the rooftop before we move downstairs for the presentation.  This is the best view in the city, the reason why most people go to the Peculiar Rabbit restaurant.

We look forward to seeing you!

Chapter Meeting Presentations
As a means of helping chapter and local community members who are certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP®) satisfy the continuing education requirements for re-certification, PMI Metrolina Chapter arranges its monthly meeting schedule to allow a 1.5 hour PDU training session to be incorporated into its normal meeting.

Topics presented during these sessions are designed to not only satisfy the PDU requirement for re-certifying as a PMP, but to also provide wide appeal to people involved in project management regardless of whether or not they are certified PMPs. The 1.5-hour sessions meet the educational requirements to qualify for 1.5 PDU credits for maintaining PMP® certification or to meet the requirement for attending 35 hours of formal project management education prior to applying to sit for the PMP® exam.

The sessions are open to all.
