President's Report

As I sit down to write this month’s report, I have the distinguished privilege to be attending the mid-year session for PMI’s Leadership Institute Master Class. For those who have not heard of this class, it is a year long program aimed at growing chapter leaders through a focus on servant leadership. Throughout the year, the 35 individuals from all over the world participate in various activities as individuals and small groups.

For the mid-year session, PMI brought us to the global headquarters to better understand everything that occurs to ensure the organization continues to be at the forefront of project management. After walking the multiple floors and speaking with various departments, it is no wonder that PMI has grown to be 300+ chapters in 18 countries in just under 50 years of existence. The passion each individual has demonstrates the organization’s pursuit to fulfill its core values: Community, Volunteerism, Engagement, Professionalism, and Project Management Impact.

It is through these core values that PMI is transforming itself to not only focus on driving organizational outcomes across the world but to focus on the people (project managers) who deliver the outcomes. As PMI embarks on its newly released strategic plan, Inventing the Professional Association of the Future, the LIMC graduates will be able to bring their respective chapters to the new and exciting levels through course offerings, events, white papers, webinars, and other materials to make you (the member) better prepared for the future.

“Our Strategy is simple: deliver value, be relevant, grow. Let’s do great things together.” - Mark Langley, PMI President and CEO

LIMC GHQ

Sincerely,

John A. Rush IV, MBA, PMP, PMI-PBA

Saluting a Great Time

By: Nealand M. Lewis, PMP®, MPM, M.S.Ed., MBA, CICA®

Saturday, April 21st. was a memorable time for many in Fayetteville, NC.  This was the site for the 2018 Military Transition O2O (Onward to Opportunity) and SkillFest event.  If that seems like a mouthful, it is… but worth every bite. The event, held in driving distance from both Cherry Point and Camp LeJeune military bases, was in fact was specifically tailored for military service members from the active duty and reserve components, along with veterans and their spouses.

Our venue sponsor Cape Fear Hospital of Fayetteville hosted this event featuring keynote speaker and renoun author Ret. Col. Jay Hicks. His topic: The Military / Project Management Alliance and the Transitioning Service Member!  WOW!!!  Jay was on hand to autograph several copies of his book titled “the transitioning Military Project Manager” raffled to to the following attendees

Jay’s message was timely as it expounded on translating and or applying military experience into commercial project management. This is something more and more transitioning Veterans are dealing with as they move to civilian life where good jobs are already scarce to find. Other event sponsors included Duke Energy, Sherpa LLC, TalentBridge, SkillMil. Several from the O2O organization were also in attendance.

The event was well attended and the participant surveys refelcted that the attendees enjoyed the content.  They were not only were regaled by Retired Col. Hicks; but they also enjoyed a robust Panel Discussion on Securing a Project Management Career; JobFair with Job Advice; One on One Resume Review, O2O Fireside Chats; and a customized PM101 Class taught by our very own Rick Sabedra.

…Oh yeah and Metrolina bags stuffed with trinkets or goodies from both sponsors and PMI Global Operation alike. Hat’s off to the entire project team for a successful event.

If you missed out, don’t worry, the Military Transition O2O and SkillFest will be back again next year by popular demand!

Chapter Mentoring Program

The mentoring program for PMI-Metrolina will provide an expert opinion concerning projects for working professionals, provide guidance for getting involved with PMI or PMI-Metrolina, and offer advice concerning marketable skills for project management domains. The mentor/mentee relationship will be a three to six month engagement requiring between ten and twenty hours per month from both volunteers. The engagement will be a one-to-one match and will follow specific guidelines to completion to meet the needs of the mentee.

One of the ways you can make a difference in the field of project management is through mentoring.  Studies have shown that mentoring others with less experience not only improves their academic/work performance but also contributes to their overall well-being, and the well-being of the community.  Members who receive mentoring are less likely to give up, quit their job, avoid pursuing a credential, and lose professional focus.   Please let us know if you would like to mentor someone and make a difference in your community today by contacting mentoring@pmi-metrolina.com!
